Prestonpans Murals Trail
Discover Prestonpans’ rich history through its unique trail of over 50 murals.
The history of the murals
While travelling through Canada, Dr Gordon Prestoungrange came across a former industrial town that had transformed its abandoned spaces into beautiful art pieces. Inspired, Gordon returned to Scotland and began to create the Prestonpans Murals Trail.
What started as an idea has flourished into over 55 murals in the small East Lothian town of Prestonpans and its designation as Scotland’s Mural Town.
Our plans for 2026 and beyond
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first mural, Morrison’s Haven Mural, we are undertaking a major refresh and restoration of project in 2026.
Starting with Kate Hunter’s Tam O’Shanter mural, which we will refresh and illuminate on Burns’ Night, we plan to refresh all 50+ murals and create a new one depicting the town’s energy heritage.
Where it’s not possible to restore or where there are multiple versions, we will recreate the murals digitally.
