Sam Burns

Sam Burns’ Yard is known across East Lothian as a treasure trove. Opened in 1948 as a firewood seller, the Yard quickly expanded to sell everything ‘from a needle to an anchor’. It became the go-to place for East Lothian residents looking for second-hand items.

The Yard sits in an old quarry. In one corner stands the recently restored old toll house, which was built in 1690.

In 2007, artist Andrew Crummy created two murals depicting three generations of the Burns family and Sam Burns at work. These murals were painted on the Yard’s gates but were damaged in a storm.
