The Prestongrange Man
The Prestongrange Man shows a miner crawling through a mine shaft, chiselling away at the coal. The man himself is made up of many parts, representing the many other industries that created ‘the birthplace of the Scottish Industrial Revolution’. We also see the faces of women and children, who used to work in the mine, and David Spencer, the founder of the Prestongrange Heritage Museum.
Working with over 40 children and adults, lead artist Andrew Crummy created this black and white mural. He chose to make it black and white to honour the two industries that were the backbone of this area: coal and salt.
